At present there is a major development going on to refurbish the Eldon Square Shopping Centre to house a new bus station and replace the older concrete floor with new materials.
Northumberland Street is the main street for shopping; it has in the past been ranked as the most expensive place for shops to rent their premises outside of London.
Nearby in Gateshead there is one of the largest indoor shopping centre in Europe, the MetroCentre.
